Two of Scotland’s heavyweight artists have teamed up to help new band St Jude’s Infirmary with their new album . Ian Rankin and Jack Vettriano have made contributions with Rankin penning lyrics and recording tracks and Vettriano creating a self-portrait for its latest album, released this weekend St Jude’s Infirmary will showcase This Has Been The Death of Us on Saturday, also unveiling its unique artwork – created by Vettriano after he was so moved by one of its songs he painted the self-portrait as a gift.
The album is all about Edinburgh, described as a “love letter to Edinburgh” by the band who have written about its streets and pubs, with the help of Rankin and Vettriano.
Bassist Grant Campbell, 34, from Abbeyhill, said: “There is no question Ian and Jack have become great patrons for the band. “I am sure there will be people who will be wary of their involvement, but when they hear the album they’ll appreciate their value. Ian has an amazing syncopation to his spoken word and Jack has a voice that sounds like it’s been dug up from the coalfield.”
St Jude’s Infirmary will perform an acoustic set at the launch of the album, on Saturday night, at the National Portrait Gallery. It has not yet been confirmed whether Rankin and Vettriano will attend. Jack Vettriano is one of the UK’s top selling artists with The Singing Butler being his most famous artwork .
Jack Vettriano’s new publishing company Heartbreak Publishing have announced a new limited edition print of Francis Bacon .When asked to talk about his favourite artist in a newspaper interview , Vettriano chose Francis Bacon
“Late last year, I visited the Bacon exhibition at the Tate Britain. I had previously seen isolated examples of his work in london and New york; I felt very priveleged to be in those rooms but the overwhelming emotion was one of pure, unadulterated shock. My senses were being ravished. I felt I was reeling from room to room, I had never experienced anything quite like this before. I fled, breathless into the Winter’s day trying to comprehend what I had just seen.
My Baconisation started in 1995 when I read Dan Farson’s wonderful ‘The Gilded Gutter Life of Francis Bacon’; I became instantly fascinated and captivated by both his work and his lifestyle. Here is a man who over forty years earlier had assaulted the sensibilities of the London art viewing public by exhibiting ‘Three Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion’. It was a horrorifying introduction to a body of work that was to evolve into surely one of the most important ever created.
Here is a man, self taught, almost entirely self-educated, painting the pleasure and the pain of his own existence. Such integrity produces great art – for great art is from the heart.”

A new series of limited edition prints by a rock legend go on sale in Edinburgh next month. The exhibition features 45 of John Lennon’s works at The Dome in George Street on March 31. It will include 14 which have never been exhibited in the UK before. The limited edition prints will all be for sale during the exhibition, which runs until April 4.
The originals of each piece were “signed” by Lennon with a special stamp known as a chop, created by artists in the Far East. His personal chop was designed to read “Like a Cloud, Beautiful Sound“, and each piece in the exhibition bears the image of the stamp.
The prints were created by Lennon’s wife , artist Yoko Ono, who in 1986 began releasing them in limited editions to establish her late husband’s fame as an artist as well as a musician. Lennon attended the Liverpool Art Institute, and continued to draw and write during his musical career. Lennon produced works in pen, pencil or Japanese sumi ink, and many of his drawings were used to illustrate three books he published during the 1960s – In His Own Write, A Spaniard in The Works and Skywriting By Word of Mouth.
